Devon's Writing Prompt

I wanted to share something that one of my students did that was so amazing that it made me cry. This was Devon's response to the first writing prompt (What is art, what role does it play in your life, how can it do you good?). Devon is a kid who tries to act really thuggish and is frequently in trouble with other teachers. I like him a lot. I knew we were going to have something interesting when he asked in the middle of the prompt how to spell "caucasian," because he didn't just want to write "white people" in fear that it would annoy someone and they'd tear it up. Here's his work:

"Art is Black people and their heritage. If you sit and read the history of the black person, and how they live their every day life, you would agree. Black people have the ability to do anything they want, and to me that's art. When you have the mind, soul, and heart to survive something that has a potential to vanish the black race existence you are a work of art.
Black people and their tradition influences the whole world. If you listen to the radio, all you will hear is hip hop which was originated by black tradition. Black music has made its name as a work of art and is one of the many tactics influencing the world today. Look at some of the other races; they dress like plack people because they feel its a GREAT fashion statement. Black people influence the world in many ways, and I think that's the definition of Art.
Being black has its advantages and disadvantages. Black people have stereotypes about them that have great advantages. For example, if you are a black basketball player and want to make it to the NBA, you would be more likely to make it. People think just because some black people live in the ghetto and spend most of their time playing sports, they start to think all black people have that advantage. Being black, mentally and emotionally strong helps you obtain a great beautiful woman. When a woman see an independent black man, they automatically want to talk to you. A mature black woman and man is the most beautiful act you will ever see.
Black people is a work of art all around. Sometimes its complicated being black but its worth it. Discrimination towards my black race has only made us stronger and mentally ready for any stumbling block in our way. I am honored to be black, beautiful, and an excellent work of art!"
